El Rey - Jose Antonio Ayala Sotelo

This stunning sculpture "El Rey" or "The King". was made by Award Winning Ceramist Jose Antonio Ayala Sotelo.

"El Rey" represents the transformation of the Bull to the Masculine form, he is sometimes seen as a demon, but he actually symbolizes the machismo element in society that only values maleness.

Jose Antonio Ayala Sotelo is from Ixtapan de la Sal, State of Mexico. His parents come from humble beginning, while his parents worked making bricks, they would give his brothers and Jose small pieces of clay to play with. Jose made toys and figures and soon became the toy maker for his family.  He became interested in the artistic process and attended the university, studying sculpture, ceramics and painting.

Jose is developing his own style, his pieces are a mix of traditional and modern art.

This year, Jose was again invited to attend the "El Premio Nacional De la Ceramica or "The National Ceramic Awards" in Tlaquepaque, Jalisco, Mexico.

His sculptures of "Toro-Hombre" "Bull-Man" and his unique ceramic masks were on display at this amazing event.
